Inside a Bathroom Remodel: What Really Happens from Demo to Done

Thinking about remodeling your bathroom but overwhelmed by the process?

You’re not alone. A bathroom remodel can feel like a major undertaking—especially if you’ve never been through one before. At The Craftsman, we believe that understanding the steps involved takes the mystery (and stress) out of the project. That’s why we’re pulling back the curtain and walking you through what really happens during a typical bathroom renovation, from demolition to the final reveal.

🔨 Step 1: Consultation & Design Planning

Before any hammer swings, it all starts with a conversation.
We meet with you to understand your vision, needs, and budget. Maybe you want a spa-like retreat, a more functional layout, or better storage. Once we understand your goals, we’ll help you select finishes, fixtures, tile, lighting, and layout changes if needed.
We may create digital renderings or mood boards to help visualize the transformation. This is also when we’ll discuss timeline, permit requirements, and expected costs.

🧱 Step 2: Demolition Day

Time to say goodbye to that old tile and outdated vanity.
Demo can be noisy and messy—but our team is efficient, clean, and respectful of your space. We protect your home’s entryways and hallways and carefully remove fixtures, drywall, flooring, and sometimes even plumbing or electrical components.

What you’ll see during demo:

  • Debris bins or dump trailers outside

  • A lot of noise and dust (we minimize both!)

  • A bathroom stripped down to studs or subflooring

⚙️ Step 3: Rough Plumbing & Electrical

With everything opened up, it's the perfect time to update what’s behind the walls.
This is when we run any new plumbing lines (for a relocated shower or double vanity, for example) and update electrical wiring, outlets, lighting, or ventilation. We make sure everything is to code—and ready to support your upgraded bathroom.

🧽 Step 4: Inspections (If Required)

Depending on your city or county, we may need to call in building inspectors to sign off on rough-in work. We handle all permitting and scheduling, so you don’t have to lift a finger. Once approved, we move to the next phase.

🧱 Step 5: Drywall & Backer Board

We begin rebuilding the structure of your bathroom.
Moisture-resistant drywall and cement board (backer board) are installed, especially around wet areas like showers and tubs. This provides a solid, long-lasting foundation for tile and paint.

🪵 Step 6: Flooring, Tiling & Walls

Here’s where the fun begins.
Your chosen floor tile is laid, walls are painted, and tile work begins for the shower, tub, or backsplash. Depending on the complexity of your design (like custom niches or mosaic accents), this step can take a few days—but it’s always worth the wait.

🚿 Step 7: Fixtures, Vanities & Cabinets

With the walls and floors complete, it’s time to install the beautiful details that make your bathroom functional:

  • Vanity and countertop

  • Faucets and sinks

  • Lighting fixtures

  • Showerheads, tubs, and toilets

  • Mirrors and shelving

This is also when any custom cabinetry or built-ins are installed.

🪞 Step 8: Final Touches & Cleanup

The last step is polishing everything until it’s showroom ready. We install hardware, seal tile, check caulking, and make sure every detail is just right. Our team deep-cleans the space and walks through a final inspection with you to ensure you're thrilled with the result.
